Student Sucess Seminar: Time Managment

My biggest time management problem is a combination of things. I am either spending time on Facebook, deciding when to do homework, staring off into space, watching TV, or spending time with friends in there rooms without my homework when I should be doing homework.
It's really weird that I used to have the TV on all the time when I was doing my homework in high school, but when I have either of them on in my door room, I pay more attention to the radio or TV. In high school, when I had the TV on, I would get distracted by the TV for a few seconds but go right back to my homework and I can't seem to do that here. It's a very disorienting experience.
When I was at home I had a very strict routine that I can never seem to find. Every day when I came home from school, I would watch TV while I ate a snack and after I was done I would start my homework with the TV still on. I really need to find the routine that I was on in high school because it helped me to get through my homework faster.

  1. Sounds like you need a plan! We'll be working out weekly schedules in class tomorrow--take yours to heart. Yes, I can't really get much done with the TV on, either, though I could when I was younger. Could it be that your current homework needs greater attention, or are you getting less sleep and are therefore more easily distracted. Whatever the reason, just turn off the TV when doing homework, and turn it on as a reward when you're finished. Same for FB.

  2. If you absolutely have to have sound while you are doing homework try listening to music. Not popular music. Try listening to soundtracks and other music that doesn't have words, so you won't be tempted to sing a long and become unfocused on the task at hand.

  3. I like Caitlin's idea. Maybe you could listen to our music history listening assignments in the background. Chopin is a good choice if you just want a melody to go to every now and then :)

  4. Sometimes if being on a strict schedule helps you out, then maybe try being back on a strict schedule for about a week or so. If this helps, then maybe you should try going back to your old habits. They say old habits die slow.

  5. I think it is not necessarily a strict schedule that will help you be on track. Personally, I like a flexible schedule along with tons of stuff to do. I think if you just find a spot of perfect quiet and just dedicate spending two hours there right before dinner everyday (or some tradition like that) will help you. It's easier to make it a habit and then you won't have to adjust to any new place. Come do homework with me anytime!!

  6. I know the feeling. I did the same thing at home in high school. I would eat my snack and watch one thirty minute long show then start my homework. And I would always go to bed around the same time.
